WMC is one of the knowledge partners in a regional project aimed at promoting innovations in composites. Small- and medium enterprises in the region of North-Holland are joining forces with various knowledge institutes in this project. This collaboration aims to increase employment and investments in the composites sector by facilitating and accelerating commercial application of innovative composite products. The 5M€ project is partly enabled by the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRO, through 'Kansen voor West') and the Province of North-Holland; the partners contribute 30 to 50% of the budget, depending on type of partner and project.
The project leader (Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Noord-Holland-Noord from Alkmaar) organised a public kick-off on December 14, 2016. During this event, which included key-note speaker Adriaan Beukers (emeritus professor in composites of Delft University of Technology), interested parties could mix and mingle with the project partners to get updated on the latest developments and to inventorise opportunities for collaboration.
The way the project works is that SME partners can collaborate with knowledge institutes as their 'extended R&D department', sharing information and facilities in order to optimally develop their products. Examples of these product developments are CPT's improved tanks for fluid transport, and Fishflow Innovation's tidal turbine. In addition, generic research themes that are tackled in the framework of these developments are thick laminates/exotherm, hybrid joints, and automation.
WMC's role in the project is focused on material and structural testing, support for product certification, including response of structures and materials to loads in underwater or cryogenic environments, and load&strain measurements.
