WMC-colleague receives PhD on mechanical behaviour of thick laminates

On January 18, WMC senior research scientist Francisco Lahuerta successfully defended his dissertation on thickness effects in composites.

The project was aimed at exploring the driving mechanisms of failure in very thick laminates (up to several decimeters thick) under quasi-static and fatigue conditions.

Lahuerta demonstrates that several test effects, leading to premature failure of thick laminates, can be quantified and avoided using careful design of the specimen and test set-up. Furthermore, investigation of the influence of varying local curing conditions inside thick laminates was enabled by a novel sublaminate technique.

The project was carried out in the framework of the ADEM programme (Advanced Dutch Energy Materials), in close collaboration with the group of Prof. Bert Sluys of Delft University of Technology.

This research has generated several spin-offs, including a patent for a novel manufacturing method, and the implementation of image processing techniques to automatically follow damage accumulation from both visible light and infrared images of structures loaded in fatigue. Further development of these methods can be expected in the time to come.
